STUDENT HEALTHCARE
There are more than 43,000 non-resident students who have chosen Milan and one of its ten universities for their education, specialisation or update courses. These young people, of 18 or more years of age, represent a great potential from many points of view. However, they also need a range of services that MeglioMilano aims to implement. For example, healthcare

| Today, a student who needs to see a doctor in Milan and whose own family doctor is based in his/her particular town of origin must go to the hospital casualty department, a notoriously lengthy process. Alternatively they may have recourse to self-medication with all its associated risks and costs. Otherwise the student could go to any family physician operating within the National Health Service, receive treatment and pay a prescription charge. They may request a refund from the Local Health Authority, but the administrative procedures and times involved are not always predictable or convenient. |

MeglioMilano, along the lines of a model already implemented in Bologna, proposes that the appropriate authorities (Regional Authorities, Local Health Authorities, universities) work closely together to provide appropriate healthcare services for off-site university students, in order that they may be guaranteed a free service, and yet at they same time can continue to keep their own family doctor in their home town.
