Why this project?
MeglioMilano has recently launched a research project that aims to contribute to Milan being promoted as a city of music par excellence. Music in fact represents an aspect that is not only historically important to Milan’s cultural life, but also to its economic life.
Music is a great market, a great “industry” and at the same time brings together artistic and cultural events, associations and meeting places that play a pivotal role in determining the quality of life of Milan’s residents. It attracts people into the city, it promotes the national and international image of the city and contributes to civic and personal development. And yet there is a lack of awareness, guides, maps and information needed to give full prominence to Milan as a city of music and so enhance its potential for development.
Within such a cognitive vacuum, the very idea of Milan “capital of music” itself appears wanting in terms of stimulating new ideas and initiatives to reassert the excellence inherent in the “city DNA”. |

Objectives
On the basis of these introductory observations, the project has been designed with the initial aims of painting as accurate a picture as possible of the size, characteristics and resources inherent the vastness and complexity of Milan’s musical life.
We intend to develop and restore a total vision of the “music system”, drawing together the threads of which it is comprised (record companies, music publishers, education and training, organisations offering live music, communication networks, associations etc) as well as its “geography” of venues. It should be viewed as a pluralistic system open to the social and cultural changes that characterise the evolution of the modern world. We will also seek to ascertain the importance – presumably considerable – that the music system occupies in the city’s economic life.
The project’s second key objective is to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the music system, with particular regard to the relationships between the “movers and shakers”, the innovative dynamics, the diverse cultural and musical mix and the planning initiatives of its protagonists.
The final “political” objective will be to determine possible strategic approaches to reinforce the role of the music system in the cultural growth and competitiveness of Milan as an “international city of music”. |
